RESUMO
Heights and weights of about 2,500 white and 7,500 coloured Bermudian school children were measured. In general white children were slightly heavier but mean heights showed no consistent differences between the two groups, thus confirming other evidence that the growth potential of negro children in the New World is at least as great as that of white children. Bermudian children were about the same size as London children measured in 1959 and were appreciably bigger than children from other parts of the West Indies, presumably because of better living standards (AU)

A case report of an apparently successful cure by ampicillin of the typhoid carrier state in a nurse aged 40 years despite the presence of gallstones is presented. No secondary cases of typhoid fever are known to have arisen from contact with her after she became aware that she was a typhoid carrier. The patient chose to be treated with ampicillin rather than by cholecystectomy. (Summary)

A survey of haemoglobin levels in Hermitage showed that 59 per cent of the men had haemoglobin levels of 14 g/100 ml. or better but only 9 per cent of the women achieved this level. The iron content of the diet is sufficient for men but is insufficient for women during the reproductive ages (AU)

Several incidents of aggressive behaviour in a rural community in Jamaica were investigated by a team of workers each of whose contributions enabled a composite picture of the incidents to be built up. Social and economic factors as well as the influence of close kin marriages were considered to be important causes of these incidents. Recommenations based on the investigating team's appraisal of the situation were made. Such an epidemiological study could not have been undertaken without the cooperation and special skills of the individual members of the team. (AU)

The stools of 244 individuals living in a suburban community in Jamaica were examined for the ova of hookworm, Ascaris Lumbricoides and Trichiuris Trichuria. A further sample of 94 children under the age of 15 years was examined for infestation with Enterobius Vermicularis. The overall incidence of infestation with hookworm was 3.3 percent with ascaris 8 percent, with trichuris 14 percent and with enterobius 27 percent. No correlation was found between the incidence of eosinophilia and infestation, nor between the sanitary circumstances and infestation. The question of treatment of the different worm infestations is discussed (AU)

We have described the occurance in three adult members of one family (two male and one female) of muscular dystrophy, in which the wasting is mainly scapulo-humeral in distribution. The condition was more marked in the male members and clinically resembled Erb's juvenile type except that the male had, in addition, a well marked peripheral neuropathy. The duration of illness in each case was 25, 29 and 32 years respectively. Reference is made to a previous report (Gil, 1933) of a case of muscular dystrophy of 37 years' duration with posterior column degeneration. (AU)
